OCR: In some cases, the binding of activator proteins at enhancer sites occurs in response to specific cellular or environmental cues. Therefore, transcription of target genes regulated by these activators occurs only when and where the appropriate activation signal is received. Steroid hormones are known to activate transcription in this manner. As shown in the illustration, cells that respond to a certain steroid hormone contain specific receptors that bind to the hormone after it enters the cell. The hormone-receptor complex then moves into the nucleus, where it binds to enhancers of its target genes and activates their transcription.
